- Thornton High School, in Thornton, Colorado, serves nearly 2,000 students with approximately 130 staff members.
- History
-
Merritt Hutton Junior-Senior High School served the communities of Northglenn and Thornton until the early 1970s, when it was scaled back to a junior high program and high school students began being served by two new high schools. Thornton High School opened in 1975.
- Campus
-
The district's Five Star Stadium is adjacent to the school. It has an upper and lower commons. It also has a library and a reading room that is no longer available to students. Recent changes to the school's policies have stirred much controversy in the student body. In an attempt to curtail tardiness, the school has restricted the student's freedoms during their free time by removing two of the major free areas, The Reading Room and The Commons. In a bold move, the administration instituted a policy of locking doors at the start of each period and herding people not in classrooms together to write a letter to their parents explaining the incident. These actions, which some say border on totalitarian, have been extremely unpopular amongst the students and have showed little to no improvement in the schools attendance numbers.
- Curriculum
- International Baccalaureate
- Middle Years Programme
-
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an educational programme intended for students aged approximately 11 to 16 (grades 6-10 in International Schools, the United States, Canada and Australia). Thus, in the United States the programme is often taught throughout the middle school years and the first two years of high school. Typically, middle schools and high schools work in coordination with each other when the programme can not be entirely hosted within one combined school. However, Willams Middle School, in Tampa, Florida and later, Herbert Ammons Middle School, Miami, Florida, have been granted the authority to host the a full MYP curriculum in only grades 6, 7, and 8. The full programme lasts 5 years although more limited programmes can be adopted with permission from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Official MYP documentation is available from the IBO in English, French, Spanish and Chinese.
- The IBO contends that the MYP programme naturally prepares students for the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and there are significant parallels in structure and philosophy.
- Diploma Programme
-
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is an educational programme examined in one of three languages (English, French or Spanish) and is a university entrance course. It is taught in 2,075 schools, often in international schools, in 125 countries (as of 2007). More than half of the schools offering the Diploma Programme are state funded schools. The programme, administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization, is the most widely recognized pre-university educational programme. However, it remains less popular than nationally affiliated preparatory programs in most countries, such as that of the Advanced Placement examination system in the United States, the A-level in the United Kingdom, the HSC (higher school certificate) in Australia or Advanced Highers system in Scotland.

- Marching Band
-
The marching band, known as the Marching Trojans, have faced a major decline in the past few years. After several years (1999-2001) of placing in the semi-finals at state competition, the band has slipped in rankings, not even qualifying for state competition during the 2005 season. In 2006 they took 1st in the Greeley Marching Invitational and 18th overall at the state competition . Future plans include competing in the 2007 Zia Marching Festival in New Mexico.
- The Marching Trojans are under the direction of Cody Gifford with help from staff and the Thorton High School Band and Orchestra Parents (THSBOP)www.thsbop.org for more information.
- A band performance at the 2007 University of Colorado Band Day may be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlDaKtyGIfg
- The band members have also put together a group known as the "Suicide Squad". A video of a performance from 2006 can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re9t8wB3omA
- Drama
-
THS has a great drama program. This fall they put on performances of Born Yesterday and You Can't Take it With You. Whether or not they will be filming a movie is unknown. Their spring musical, held in March, will be The Music Man.
- For the 2007-2008 school year, they put on performances of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit and Private Lives. They shot a movie called Friends Forever, written by a former student. Their musical for the 2007-2008 year was originally going to be Godspell, but because of religious issues, was changed to Once Upon A Mattress in mid-march. The set for this performance took third place in a set-building contest and was built entirely without professional help. Their One-Act/Ten-Minute Plays were Friday, April 4, 2008 and their melodrama "D.K. Molar The Devious Dentist" was shown later in May which was assistant directed by Chris Deaguero.
- Their musicals the in 2006 and 2007 have been The Pajama Game and Little Shop of Horrors, respectively.
