School Notes:
  • Greenwich High School is a public school in Greenwich, Connecticut serving grades 9-12. The school's philosophy of "freedom with responsibility" encourages students to make decisions affecting both their study and leisure time. A distinct feature of this philosophy is that students are allowed to leave campus when they do not want to attend classes or for meals without their grades suffering. Also, there is no daily "homeroom" class. Another interesting component of this education is that while many schools have "study halls" assigned to students when they do not have class, "study halls" are only issued as punishment at GHS. The school was featured in Forbes and called the 'Shopping Mall Education.' It is the lone public high school in Greenwich, Connecticut where over 60,000 people live. Though it has students from all backgrounds, as Greenwich is the wealthiest community in the world, it has many students from wealthy and educated backgrounds. In typical years, more than 97% of the student body continues with education beyond high school. In 2005 about 80% of these attend universities of Ivy League rating. Consequently, the "freedom with responsibility" philosophy prepares the majority of students who will be away at a university months after graduation.
  • School Organization: Entering students are randomly assigned to one of five Houses - Bella, Cantor, Clark, Folsom, and Sheldon, however entering students with older siblings currently attending the school have the option to join their sibling's house or enter the random lottery. Each house has its own housemaster, as well as its own guidance counselors and other support services for students, along with a core English/Social Studies program in grade nine and typically ten. Each house, with the exception of Cantor is one floor, contains a secretary, four guidance counselors, classrooms, teachers' offices, a housemaster, librarian, food court, cafe and lounge facility for studying. Cantor house has all of the above, but has two floors since it was originally the "International Wing" housing all the foreign language classes and the foreign language computer lab. The school also has a science wing, which consists of Physical Education, Music, and Science. In the far end of the science wing is a currently functioning Foucault pendulum.
  • The Houses adjoin a one-acre enclosed area called the Student Center, which serves as a sit down restaurant, meeting hall and a place to relax between classes. Classes meet on a rotating eight-block schedule. A large Media Center supports all learning programs of the school and helps students become lifelong learners by providing a wide variety of information, resources and technology.
  • Numerous Computer Labs are available throughout GHS for teachers and students. Labs are located in the houses, science, foreign language and art and music wings and the Media Center. Additional computers are available in Learning Centers, the Media Center and other departments throughout the building. The school offers Wi-Fi throughout the campus.Extracurricular Activities: GHS has a number of student activities designed to promote a broad spectrum of interests. The school's student newspaper is The Beak. The yearbook is The Compass. Greenwitch is the school's student literary magazine. Student activities include student government, as well as academic, drama, international, language, service, sports and special interest clubs. The Greenwich High School Theater Arts program has been recognized nationally for its excellence.
  • Examples of Student Activities at GHS: Habitat for Humanity, Key Club, Model UN, Debate Club, Diversity Awareness, AIDS Awareness, Gay-Straight Alliance, Link Club.
  • School Sports: There are 36 GHS Cardinals varsity sports teams. In addition, they field many club teams in sports that few high schools in the nation do. GHS is a member of FCIAC, or the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference and the Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association. GHS is often in competition for the county championships in a number of sports. The men's has been particurlarly successful, having won over 30 state championships. In particular, Greenwich has been dominant in swimming, diving and water polo winning many state championships and multiple multi-state and U.S. regional championships. Neverthless, they have also won multiple state championships in traditional sports such as football.
  • Examples of Cardinal Sports Teams: Fencing, Football, Lacrosse, Rugby, Sailing, Swimming, Rowing, Waterpolo, Wrestling.
  • Additional Information: The school was designed by a Californian architect and completed in the 1970s. The original design had an open covered walkway between the Student Center and the Science wing. However, this did not suit New England weather and the walkway was converted to an enclosed glass structure. In 1998, a $40 million science and technology wing was constructed.
