Great teachers.

Shelton High does have a few good things about it. There are a wide variety of courses to explore, such as marine biology, herpetology, forensic psychology, statistics, current events, and more. It exposes you to all kinds of subjects, so you can discover what really interests you. However, many students in these classes are only there to fulfill credits, and don't care about the subject itself. But if you're there because you want to learn, it can be highly beneficial. Additionally, Shelton High takes college searching seriously and is very helpful in this aspect. Though I give the school credit where credit is due, I feel as though the negative aspects outweigh the good. Teachers can be a hit or miss. Some genuinely love their job and engage with students, whereas others are not. Many staff members are also biased against students, especially when it comes to dress code. Finding genuinely good friends is difficult. If you're not an outgoing, talkative person, people won't usually pay attention to you. Acceptance of minorities and the LGBT+ community is mixed. There are clubs and events dedicated to making people more educated and open-minded (i.e.: Gay-Straight alliance club, acknowledgment of black history month, etc), but there are students who are prejudiced against, or at least ignorant about, these groups. There's little support for students with disabilities and mental illnesses. I rarely feel safe at school. SHS is a rather large school in downtown Shelton, yet there are no metal detectors and only a few security guards. There are fights almost every week, and though most of them don't escalate, it can be very scary. There is little to no appreciation of the arts. A lot of funding is aimed towards athletics, but when it's time for budget cuts, art is the first thing to go. The sanitary conditions at Shelton are borderline unacceptable. The building is poorly constructed there are barely any windows, and almost no ventilation. The bathrooms reek of weed. I've seen garbage in the hallways and pieces of food on the ground (outside the cafeteria). Academic wise, Shelton is mediocre. If you work hard, you'll do just fine. I don't feel challenged most of the time, but it's not as if going to school here is a breeze. The difficulty mostly depends on whether you do your work. Like mentioned early, sometimes teachers are good, sometimes they aren't. You have to hope you get lucky. Though this has been my personal experience with Shelton, it's important to stay open minded attending school. If you go to Shelton High, or are going to attend Shelton High, I hope you have a positive experience with the school, even though I have not.
