School Notes:
  • J.W. Mitchell High School is a public high school in New Port Richey, Florida of the Pasco County Schools in Pasco County, Florida. Home to the Mustangs, JWMHS is one of the largest schools in the county.
  • The school received its name as a condition by the owner of the land, James W. Mitchell, who lives nearby. Many people expected the high school to follow the name of its adjacent Seven Springs Middle School and nearby Seven Springs Elementary School.
  • History: In 2005, Tiede announced she would be leaving, and was to be replaced by Ric Mellin, an Assistant Principal from Wesley Chapel High School. Mellin quickly developed a reputation for his stricter punishments and the elimination of privileges. He has received much criticism from students and staff alike because of drastic changes, such as students not being able to eat outside and a much stricter enforcement of dress code unlike in earlier years when Tiede was principal.
  • Also in 2005, 27-year old Josue Oswaldo Ramirez-Mejia, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, enrolled at JWMHS posing as an 18 year old. A month after enrolling, he dropped his wallet. A student found the wallet and turned it in to a teacher, who looked at Ramirez-Mejia's ID and discovered that he was 27, and not 18. The teacher turned in the wallet to the school resource officer. Ramirez-Mejia was arrested and charged with forging an instrument. Ramirez-Mejia said that he wanted to get a good education. Ironically, he would have been able to take adult education courses.
  • J.W. Mitchell High School Today: Many of the teachers and staff that opened the school seven years ago still remain, but much has changed in all.
  • Mitchell operates around a learning community model and has earned a "B" grade the last four years in a row.
