There aren’t many sure bets in life, but this was one of them. No one could have been surprised by the news last week that a lawsuit had been filed on behalf of the kindergarten student who was “voted out of class” at Morningside Elementary School in 2008.

School district officials announced at the board’s Tuesday meeting two new appointments of principals. Superintendent Michael Lannon introduced Todd Smith as the principal of Fort Pierce Central High School and Cortina Bell-Gray as principal of Morningside Elementary School.

One year ago, a 5-year-old autistic boy was brought to the front of his classroom. He left moments later feeling like an outcast. Some experts say the case of Alex Barton, who was voted out of his kindergarten classroom 14-to-2, brought about change and awareness of how autistic children are educated. Others say there still is a long way to go.
