Man guilty in shooting death of seventh-grader near KCK school (The Kansas City Star)

An 18-year-old man is guilty of first-degree murder in the Feb. 9 shooting death of a Kansas City, Kan., seventh-grader, a jury ruled today. Ricardo Zamora died after being shot in the head that afternoon in the 1100 block of Splitlog Avenue, near Pearson Elementary School. Ricardo, a student at Central Middle School, turned 14 the day after the shooting.

Students from M.E. Pearson Elementary School and Frank Rushton Elementary School took part in today's International Walk to School Day. M.E. Pearson students began walking from Waterway Park in Kansas City, Kan., joining 45 schools and 13,000 other participants in the Kansas City metro area. Students from Pearson Elementary School of Modesto got a tour Thursday of the Resendiz Family Fruit Barn in Hughson. At the conclusion of the tour, the 100 or so students got to pick out their own pumpkins.
