- Sandpoint High School is a high school in Sandpoint, Idaho, United States.
- Extracurricular activities
- Academic Decathlon
-
In 2006, the school's Academic Decathlon team placed first at the Idaho Academic Decathlon State Competition, edging out competitor Centennial High School. The victory marks the first for Sandpoint High School. The team traveled to San Antonio for the national finals, placing 17th overall and earning the title "Rookie of the Year" for a division II school.
- The SHS AcaDeca team has greatly improved in recent years and has sported many statewide top-scoring individuals in the last 5 years. In 2008, the team won 6 of the 9 overall individual metals and was very close in overall team scores with Centennial placing first in the state and Sandpoint second. In 2008, Sandpoint scored its highest team score ever earning over 43,000 points (out of 60,000) possible.
- In 2009 Sandpoint's Academic Decathlon team represented Idaho in the online nationals competition for medium-sized schools and placed first overall.
- Cedar Post
-
The school is also known for its award-winning newspaper, the "Cedar Post." The paper gained national fame when it took home a seventh place honor at the National Scholastic Press Association's high school journalism convention in Washington D.C. in 2003. It was the paper's second year under the leadership of adviser Erin Daniels. The following year, the paper received an eighth place award at the same convention in Atlanta. In 2005, the Cedar Post staff traveled to Chicago for the same convention. The paper took fourth place, the highest honor it has received to date. The paper did well in similar conventions over the next few years.
- The paper was both applauded and scorned in 2009 after the February issue highlighted the controversial topics of sexting (highschoolers sending risque pictures and texts), drinking and drugs at dances. Several changes were made in school dance policies soon after, a move that supporters of the paper lauded as a positive change brought about by solid, investigative journalism.
- The 2006-2007 school year inaugurated a new adviser, Corinne Flowers. After multiple conflicts with the administration, it was announced that Flowers would not be returning as Cedar Post adviser as her contract was not renewed.
- The 2007-2008 school year saw the inauguration of former Career Pathways teacher Rick Rhodes. After clashes with both the Cedar Post's Editorial Board and SHS Administration Rhodes announced his resignation in the summer of 2008.
- The 2008-2009 school year imaugurated yet another new advisor, Mike Gearlds. Gearlds is a former staffer of local newspapers The Daily Bee and The River Journal and has written for Sandpoint Magazine, North Idaho Lifestyle and Action Pursuit Games. He taught journalism at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, from 1988 to 1995.
- Administrative changes
-
The 2005/2006 school year saw the departure of retired lieutenant colonel and principal James Soper. He was replaced by Becky Weller Kiebert, Ph.D., who transferred from within Lake Pend Oreille School District. She was selected by a panel of elected faculty members after a rigorous application process. Also considered but subsequently not hired for the position were current Vice Principals Penny Tenuto, Ph.D. and Rick Dalessio. Tenuto chose to remain as Vice Principal and Dalessio transferred to Lake Pend Oreille Alternative High School as principal, which was Kiebert's last position with the district. To fill Dalessio's role, SHS gained Vice Principal and head football coach Mike Mitchell.
