Standardized test under the federal No Child Left Behind Act are a measuring stick that's set high; only a fraction of those who do not measure up can trip entire school districts. That was the case this year for area school districts based in Elgin, Carpentersville, Burlington and St. Charles.

School District U46 recently acknowledged. The district thanked its many volunteers for their many contributions during the past school year. District-wide volunteers include the many councils including Citizens' Advisory Council, which has been advising the district for more than 50 years, and other committees.

The principal of a Chicago middle school will take that position at Canton Middle School for the coming school year. Lorraine Cruz will take over the helm at Canton starting July 1.

Gustave "Gus" Stuertze was a gentle yet outgoing Renaissance man whose careers ranged from psychotherapist to bus driver to welder to insurance adjuster to cop. He loved bluegrass music, snakes and the Orient, and he rode in fox hunts. But he was best known as a freelance photographer whose photos appeared almost daily in The Courier-News.
