The day began as usual. The students at Deep River-Millersburg Elementary School gathered in the gym to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But Tuesday wasnt an ordinary day. It was the last day of school for good.

Residents of Millersburg fighting to keep their elementary school open demanded the school board review the proposed 2009-10 budget for the district to find what they believed were enough cuts to save the school, but what they found was an even deeper problem. Superintendent Bob Szymoniak said the line-by-line budget review uncovered more problems than cures.
