- Lawrence Central High School (LCHS) is a high school with over 2,600 students, in northeast Marion County, Indiana.
- Overview
-
It was established in 1963 and is one of two high schools in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township.
- LCHS is ethnically diverse, with a student population that is 47% white, 42% black, 5% Hispanic, 1% Asian and 4% multiracial (2005 figures). Lawrence Central's rival high school is Lawrence North High School
- Currently Lawrence Central is remodeling its facilities by completely removing the South Gymnasium and rebuilding it as an Indoor Fieldhouse for all of Lawrence Central's Gym classes. The construction is slotted for completion at the end of 2009-2010 school year (unfortunately for the students, it looks done, but they won't let them leave through said area so traffic sucks at the end of a school day.) The North Gym, which is currently the only functional gymnasium, is also newly renovated. Near the end of 2008 the gym was re-opened after renovations. It is now a two-story gym with a basketball court on each floor. Lawrence Central also was home to the first High School dome, built in 1964, in Indiana, but that has now been demolished to make room for the new fieldhouse.
- Recently Lawrence Central administrators have been enforcing an idea to increase what they call "discipline" and organization. The patrons of the school are required to constantly have a school identification visible on their persons. This rule, some argue is particularly harsh (however, the lack of enforcement hardly makes this worth mentioning) because not any form of photographic identification will satisfy it. The identification must be school issued, and must be proper (photo, barcode, year, name, date of birth, and Lawrence Central High School). This identification is required for everything, from voting in the school election, to buying lunch, to entering the media center. Of course, the quality of the school issued I.D.s and lanyards is so poor that students are more likely to lose their I.D. by actually wearing them, as the policy states. So much for security... This year, they also won't be giving students new I.D.'s with the current picture. This is probably to save money, but no one still looks like their picture so it's a major security issue and really annoying.
