School Notes:
  • Colby High School is a public school in Colby, Kansas. Located on 1890 S. Franklin, it enrolls students every year.
  • The high school was founded in 1890 by the citizens of the town. As the community grew, so did the school, and eventually surrounding smaller schools in Levant, Kansas, and Gem, Kansas, were closed so students could attend classes at Colby. Until 1999, Colby High School was located on Third Street, but the need for a larger building was recognized, and thus emerged the building that accommodates the students and teachers now. The building makes up for its lack of windows and originality with a large technology lab and a fully-stocked art room. Also, students and teachers are encouraged to buy a ceiling tile for $8 and paint or collage on it so subsequent Colby High School attendees can forever see the artwork of their peers. There are also a few student produced murals on the wall.
  • Most notable about Adolf Robbins is his "no purse, no backpack" policy, which he and his staff whole-heartedly enforce as of August 2005.
  • It is nearly impossible to speak about Colby High School without referencing the peculiar way teachers have of coming and going. Every year, anywhere from 10 to 15 staff members quit, leaving the school board scrambling for qualified candidates to fill needed positions.
  • Sports: Sports are a big part of life in Colby, Kansas. Colby High School serves to entertain citizens of the town with big events like The Orange and Black Classic. Every year in January, the basketball tournament is held, attracting teams from as far away as Wichita, Kansas. Colby's official mascot is the eagle, and at football and basketball games "Elvis the Eagle", a student in a suit, is often spotted waving his or her arms frantically, prompting students and parents to cheer. Besides basketball, students can participate in tennis, football, golf, volleyball, wrestling, cross country, or track. Volleyball team has gone to state for the last three consecutive years. The CHS golf team has gone to state the last four years, with medalists being Jarred Helin, Fur Finley, and Chris Staley. The wrestling team has been a local powerhouse for many years. Cole "I wish I was superman" Garcia won state in 2005 and 2006. Football has a record amount of losses for the past five years. They won their first game in twenty straight games this year also. The cross country team has consistently gone to state.
  • Open Lunch Policy: Colby High School sporadically grants its students open lunch, provided they are complying with Open Lunch Rules. Currently, these rules are unwritten, but largely assumed: A student may leave, but must be back within thirty minutes. A student absolutely may not bring back food for those unable to go out for Open Lunch. Only upperclassmen may go out for open lunch. Seniors may only go out to open lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Juniors may only go out to lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pizza may only be ordered on open lunch days. For the first semester of the 2006-2007 school year, Open Lunch was going along swimmingly. However, when it was discovered that students were abusing Open Lunch privileges (for reasons that remain under wraps), Principal Rocky Robbins revoked the privledge for two weeks.
  • Academics: Pupils must be enrolled in seven courses to be considered full-time students. The school offers English and Spanish; several math classes, the highest being Applied Calculus I; numerous history classes; and a handful of randomly themed classes such as Fashion Design. The school supports a marching band, concert choir, forensics team, yearbook and newspaper staff, and a scholars' bowl team.
  • Notable Alumni: Samuel Ramey, opera singer, graduated from Colby High School in 1960. Mark Schultz (musician), a Christian singer, graduated from the same institution in 1989.
