School Notes:
  • Corona del Sol High School is located in Tempe, Arizona, approximately seven miles south of the campus of Arizona State University. The school colors are burnt orange and yellow, and the mascot is the Aztec warrior. Corona del Sol was established in 1977 and is a part of the Tempe Union High School District.
  • Corona is a closed boundary school that does not permit any outside students to attend. In addition to this, Corona strictly enforces a closed-campus policy. Students attending through grades 9, 10 and 11 may not leave campus without an adult checking them out for the day. Seniors are only permitted to leave campus with a special ID which can only be obtained with a signed and notarized parent permission form.
  • Activities: Corona competes at the 5A-I conference level and is a member of the Central Region, which is comprised of 5 schools: Basha, Corona del Sol, Desert Vista, Marcos de Niza, and Mountain Pointe High Schools.
  • The school has over 100 clubs and activities including a school newspaper, yearbook, various sports teams, marching band, a choir program, orchestra, and a speech and debate team. Corona del Sol continues to be a racially and socially accepting environment and entertains a diverse school population.
  • In addition to having an enormous amount of school spirit at sporting events, Corona del Sol has a large music and fine arts program, boasting four concert bands, a marching band, two concert orchestras, as well as five choir classes, and the largest percussion program in the state. The orchestra program made up more than half of the Regional Orchestra in the 2005-2006 school year. Piano, Guitar, Percussion, and World Music (Steel Drums) are also offered. Other fine arts that students may take part in are Stagecraft, Ceramics, Basic Art and Design, Photography, Drawing and Painting, etc.
  • Corona is also known for having a consistently high number of National Merit Finalists for a public school (never less than 8 in a year). In the 2004-2005 school year Corona had 16 National Merit Scholars. Corona is among some of the largest schools in the state of Arizona and prides itself on its academic prowess, consistently positive school spirit, and one of the most effective Student Councils in Arizona.
  • Varsity Sports: Boys and Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Football, Volleyball, Badminton, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Wrestling, Track and Field, Baseball, Soccer, Swimming.
  • Other Sports: Boys and Girls Golf, Boys and Girls Swim & Dive, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Boys Hockey. (Lacrosse and Hockey were started, and continue to be, school sports via clubs).
  • Behavior: Corona is known for its unruly behavior among students. In recent years, drug and alcohol use at dances and other Corona events has been a persistent problem which the faculty have been unable to curtail despite their best efforts. Warnings are regularly issued in the parent newsletter, intoxicated or high students are frequently ejected from dances, and even breathalyzers and police are now deployed at dance entrances, all to little effect.
  • In 2003, end of the year pranks got out of hand. Although some students found them extremely humorous, the administration was angered by incidents involving urine and bleach filled waterballoons (which was even carried over by a few students to nearby middle schools) and has taken measures to prevent future pranks, such as the controversial "Backpack Ban" for the last two weeks of each school year. The strict policies appear to be working so far, as there have been no more pranks approaching the scale and destruction of that of May 2003.
