School Notes:
  • Northshore High School, often abbreviated to NHS, "A Challenging and Caring Community, Encouraging Lifelong Learning for All Students", is a public school for grades nine through tweleve located in Slidell, Louisiana that serves the eastern end of St. Tammany Parish as well as some residents of Slidell proper. It is cited as one of the finest public high schools in Louisiana. The school consistently scores highly on standardized tests, achieving a composite score of 22.8 on the ACT for the 2003-2004 school year.
  • History: Northshore High School was incorporated in 1982. It was the fourth high school to serve the Slidell area. At first, it was meant to serve 800 students, but since that time it has grown with the population of Slidell to a student body of about 1500. One recent major development was the completion of a new auditorium during the 2004-2005 school year. Prior to the auditorium's construction, the small stage in the school cafeteria was used for presentations, shows, etc. The first major use of the new auditorium was the Senior class of 2005's performance of Seussical.
  • Uniforms were adopted for Northshore High School students beginning with the 1999-2000 school year. It was the first public high school in St. Tammany Parish to adopt a uniform policy. The uniform policy has grown increasingly strict with time, especially with regard to student identification. Students must wear student IDs at all time, in addition to school uniforms. No warning is issued to students who are found without IDs, they are simply given an automatic detention.
  • During the period of late 2005, following Hurricane Katrina, until early 2006, the uniform policy was abandoned to ensure that students that had no access to any uniforms following the storm would have time to secure new ones.
  • During Katrina, Northshore High School was used as a shelter. Reopening on 3 October 2005, half-day classes were adopted for students so the facilities could be used in the afternoon for students of Salmen High School, which was destroyed during the storm. Full-day classes were reinstituted beginning 17 January 2006, when Salmen was able to move to the repaired St. Tammany Jr. High. In addition, free lunch was offered to all students of Northshore after Katrina until the end of November, 2005.
  • Athletics: Northshore is in District 4-5A of the LHSAA. Northshore fields varisity teams in football, both boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball, cross-country, and a full participation track and field team.
  • In the football team's 2006 campaign, led by first year head coach Mike Bourg, the Panther football team defeated both thier cross-town rivals, powerhouses Salmen High and Slidell High for the first time ever in the same season. The Panthers also earned a spot in the state playoff tournament for the first time in three years, after finishing the season 6-4 tieing for the best record in school history.
