AUGUSTA — The 49th Maine Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships were held at Cony High School in Augusta on Saturday. Youth track teams from Brunswick, Woolwich and Lisbon competed in the 33-team event, won by the Panther Track Club of Poland with 501 points.

Cony High School is located in Augusta, Maine. It has its origins in the Cony Female Academy, which was founded in 1818 to provide free education to orphans or other girls under the age of 16. The high school was built in 1880 and expanded in 1930 and 1965. In the fall of 2006, a new Cony High School opened at the location of the Capital Area Technical Center on Pierce Drive. It is architecturally linked to the design of the old Cony�H.S. which featured a wedge-shaped flatiron design. The flatiron building has been preserved as a building of historical significance and is in the National Register of Historical Places in Maine. The current population in Cony High is about 959�students. The drop out rate at Cony has increased to 12%.
