School Notes:
  • Hammond High School is a secondary school located in Columbia, Maryland near the Kings Contrivance Village Center. Established in 1976, the school is located in Howard County and is part of the Howard County Public School System.
  • Sports: The Wrestling team has won numerous county and state championships dating from 1990. Hammond's wrestling program gained a resurgence in the 2004-2005 season with County, Region, and State championships, and repeated the feat during the 2005-2006 season. Their 2006-2007 undefeated Howard County record ended on January 23, 2007 however, when rival River Hill High Shool won, 34-32.
  • Hammond's boys' Soccer team won back-to-back regional crowns in 2001 and 2002. In 2006, the team had its most successful season, winning a State Championship with a 3-1 victory over Loch Raven, after reaching the state finals in 2005.
  • It's Academic Team: The Hammond It's Academic (regional high school game show) Team for the 2005-2006 school year was composed of two seniors, captain Alyssa Gottschlich and Owen Greeley, and a junior, Christine(Tini) Wirth. They squared off in their first round match with the Institute of Notre Dame and Perryville and came away with 645-370-320 victory, only unable to answer 7 of the competitive questions. This stunning performance foretold the rest of the season as they went on to win the Baltimore area championship and drew for second place in the It's Academic Superbowl with the team from Central Virginia, Charlottesville, losing to Richard Montgomery High School.
  • The team also performed well outside of the show in local tournaments, earning a wild card spot to attend the 2006 NAQT National Championship, where Richard Montgomery also triumphed in an exciting match against State College A.
  • Their record over the school year: 9th at Blake(without Captain Alyssa), 5th at Maryland, 4th at Whitman, 5th at Centennial, 5th at ER, and 10th at Walter Johnson.
  • Other members of the team that did not compete on television included Andrew Beyler, Roxanne Bublitz, Trevor Bublitz, Zac Cooke, Tom George, Jeff Leonard, Kate LoPresto, Jennifer Marker, Brett Mueller, Alanna Olive-Smith, Anisha Parikh, Lizzy Wunsch, and Seth Swenson.
  • Green Eggs and Hammond Annual Tournament: Hammond annually hosts the Green Eggs and Hammond quizbowl tournament the first Saturday after winter break. The tournament contains house written questions from the students, coach, and parent volunteers. In recent years, each game consists of 5 rounds, a 10 question competitive category round (each answer begins with the letter a, for example), a 10 question round of tossups, an individual round where each team gets 5 questions from two different categories, and a 15 question grab bag round. In the 2006 tournament, the team's motto "There is no shame, only points" became two categories, in the first, the answers did not contain the letters s, h, a, m, or e and in the second all of the answers contained the word "point". The current defending champions are Hammond's rivals, Richard Montgomery.
  • In the 1980s, the school was often referred to as "The Zoo on 32," a phrase which dates back to when Guilford Road was called Old Route 32.
