It was the battle of the brains at Jones County Junior College Wednesday as high school students from 21 area high schools gathered at JCJC’s Ronald Whitehead Advanced Technology Center to vie for the title of the “No. 1 Math Bowl Team” in the region.

I don't care what kind of program they attempt to put in place, that rivalry will not change.

Laurel's James H. Harrison Elementary School has announced its honor roll students for the first quarter grading period. Students must earn a 3.0 to earn the recognition, said third-grade teacher Karen Taylor.

Laurel High School (LHS) is a public high school located in Laurel, Maryland, and is the oldest school in the Prince George's County Public Schools system. Founded in 1899 with an enrollment of 59 students and four teachers, the original school building is now the Phelps Community Center in Laurel. The original building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1965, the school moved to a larger building at 8000 Cherry Lane in Laurel, and annex an adjacent elementary school shortly thereafter. Today, Laurel High School enrolls roughly 1,990 students in grades 9 through 12. The school mascot is the Spartan, and the school colors are blue and gold.
Fulfilling an objective of the Prince George’s County Capital Improvement Program since 1989, construction on a new 800-seat auditorium for the school is expected to begin in February 2009, with the addition likely finished in time for the 2009-2010 school year.
Laurel is distinguished from several other schools in the area through its Technical Academy program, which offers students courses in Computer Networking, Automotive Mechanics, Cosmetology, and Nursing/Medical Careers.
Laurel High's student newspaper, The Shield, is the most decorated student paper in Prince George's County and is one of the most acclaimed in the state of Maryland. Since its inception in the 1995–1996 school year, The Shield has won several awards from the American Scholastic Press Association, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and the Quill and Scroll International Society. Prior to 1995–96 school year, the school paper operated under the name "The Tattler".
Principal Dwayne Jones is a former Laurel High student and was a member of the last Laurel High Basketball Team to win a state title.
Since August 2007, school policy requires students to wear uniforms.
