The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education will have much to discuss during its meeting Monday evening. When the board's executive committee met Thursday morning, members voiced concerns they had with budgetary recommendations made by the finance committee. On Wednesday morning, the finance committee recommended the district make approximately $554,500 in proposed mid-year cuts.

Having first learned the value of community service as a Girl Scout, Penny Boldrey was honored Friday for her professional and volunteer accomplishments by being named the 2009 Athena Award recipient. The award, now in its 15th year in Alpena, recognizes an individual who has attained a high level of professional excellence and who has given back to the community in a meaningful way.
APS school board approves 2009 audit (The Alpena News)

The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education approved the audit for the 2008-09 fiscal year, 6-0, at its board meeting Monday night. Certified Public Accountants Phil Straley and Mark Sandula of Straley, Ilsley and Lamp P.C. told members of the board the district earned a clean, or unqualified opinion, for the previous fiscal year.

The roof at Thunder Bay Junior High School will be replaced this summer as approved by the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education during its meeting Monday. ChristenDetroit was unanimously awarded a bid to fix the roof - which has been leaking since it was built 10 years ago - in the amount of $911,000.
