ISHPEMING - The number of students absent due to illness has caused the NICE Community Schools to close for the remainder of the week. According to Superintendent Michael Haynes, 15 percent of students were absent Monday and 22 percent Tuesday. "The primary reason for closing is we were seeing a spike in the number of absentees due to flu-like symptoms," Haynes said.

The H. H. Dow High and Midland High School Saginaw Valley League Teacher of the Year Committees have named their 2009 Award recipients. The awardees were honored Wednesday at the Horizon Center in Saginaw at the annual Saginaw Valley League Scholar/Athlete Luncheon.

NEGAUNEE - Although perhaps not used as much on a daily basis as a classroom, a school's auditorium plays an important role in the lives of students, hosting concerts , plays, rehearsals and ceremonies. When a renovation project started earlier this month is completed, students at Negaunee High School will have a larger and improved auditorium for their use.
