- History
-
John Marshall High School is located in Rochester, Minnesota.Often referred to as simply "JM," John Marshall adopted "The Rocket" as an official mascot. The School colors are Red & Black. "A mark of excellence" is the motto of the school. After many years of complaints from students and faculty alike, major renovations began to expand the school's lack of space as well as bring it up to code in the summer of 2005. The new science wing was completed in the summer of 2006. The cafeteria was also improved. The reconstruction project was completed in 2008. In 2008, John Marshall celebrated its 50th anniversary since opening its doors in 1958. 50 years of rocket pride, tradition, and excellence.
- Athletics
-
Rochester John Marshall is a member of the Big Nine Conference. John Marshall Athletics has had a history of success. The John Marshall's Boy's hockey team holds the distinction of being the only hockey team from the Big 9 to ever win the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. Many consider the 1977 State Champion team to be one of the most shocking victories in tournament history. Prior to their amazing state run, no team from below the greater Twin Cities metro area had ever made a legitimate run at the State Title. They were also runners-up in the State Tournament in 1979 as well as 1989. The School also has a rich tradition of victory on the gridiron. JM won the State Championships in 1973 & 1974, was Runner Up in 1993 and was a State Semi-Finalist in 2001. JM has made 13 appearances in the State Tournament. The football team competes within the Big Nine conference, and has been big nine champions 27 times. The rockets compete in Section 1AAAAA at the state level. They were Section 1AAAAA champions in 1993,1996,1998,2000,2001 and 2004. The team they beat for the Section 1AAAAA title in 2004 was their crosstown rival Century High School. The Score was 20-19. In recent years JM's baseball program has excelled, often ranked among the best in the state. In 2008 they were Big Nine champions and section 1AAA Champions making a well deserved state appearence. They ended the season with an overall record of 24-4.John Marshall has always had a great intracity rivalry with Rochester Mayo High School. With the building of Century High School in 1997 a new rivalry was born. The Century vs. John Marshall rivalry has been taken to new levels, most recently when Fox Sports Net North broadcast a hockey game as part of their High School Hockey showcase program.John Marshall, once the lowest ranked swim/dive team in the Big Nine Conference, went on to win sections and Big Nine in 2008, overturning Faribault's long-standing Big Nine championship title run.

- Fine Arts

In the fall the Symphonic Winds (Honors band) and the Symphonic Band combine to make the John Marshall Marching Band. The marching band plays at the football team’s home games. A variety of field shows have been played such as West Side Story(2001), River Dance(2002), All That Jazz(2003), Zorro(2004), The Incredibles(2005), Jekyll and Hyde(2006) and Wicked (2007)and West Side Story in the upcoming year(2008). The marching band then concludes their marching season with an Indoor Concert. The one time both of the bands get to combine to make a concert band is at the Holiday concert. The ninth grade band also performs at this concert. The last portion of this concert then features a combination of all three bands.
- During second semester Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band split up into different classes. The two bands then work on their music, and perform a collection of shows that include a solo and ensemble contest a winter concert, and at the Fine Arts Festival at the end of the year. Symphonic Winds performs at a one additional event, the Big Nine Music Festival. For the final concert at the festival a few students from each school are chosen to be apart of the select band, choir and orchestra. The John Marshall Marching Band won state competitions in the years 1980-1984, then 1987-1992 then 2004-present.
