When Russell Leadbetter came home from work, he did it with style. At quittin’ time, Russell would swing low, sweeping the big mechanical bird over the little village of Dalton and the Gulf Gas Station in town. Gas station attendant Vern Ackert knew it was Russell because, as Russell himself once said with a chuckle, “(Vern’s) windows rattled.”

This is the first time the two historical societies have conducted joint Fireside Chats. The event will be held at St. Jacob's Community Church, 8169 Kent Ave. Oct. 4, 2-4 p.m. The Cairo Harvest Festival is in its 17th year.
