For a Long Branch High School (LBHS) student, a chance encounter with a homeless man is making a difference for many of the area's less fortunate. LBHS senior Lucy McGrath has spent the better part of the last month walking around the school with a garbage bag filled with donated shoes and jackets collected for a drive she is running.

LONG BRANCH — The high school's National Honor Society will sponsor a shoe drive during October to benefit Soles4Souls Inc. The drive will run through Oct. 31 at the high school, located on Westwood Avenue.

Long Branch High School is a comprehensive, four-year community public high school that serves students in ninth through twelfth grades in the city of Long Branch, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Long Branch Public Schools. LBPS, an Abbott District, serves the city of Long Branch.
As of the 2006-07 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,181 students and 120 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 9.8.
The school was the 246th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools. The school was ranked 290th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.
Athletics
The Long Branch High School Green Wave compete in the Shore Conference, an athletic conference made up of private and public high schools centered at the Northern Jersey Shore. All schools in this conference are located within Monmouth County and Ocean County. The league operates under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).
The school wrestling team won the 2008 Group II team state championship — its first ever — and completed perfect record of 26-0.
In the 2007-08 football season Long Branch made it to the Central, Group III tournament final, losing to Moorestown High School by a score of 20-6.
