Clarkstown High School South is a public high school located in West Nyack, New York. The school educates students in grades 9 through 12, and one of two high schools in the Clarkstown Central School District (CCSD). It is commonly nicknamed Clarkstown South, or simply "South."
Buildings and facilities
Clarkstown South building consists of a main lobby, large auditorium, a music wing, gym, and three floors of classrooms. In the main lobby there is a student store that offers a wide variety of items ranging from waters and sodas to candy and delicious cookies. This store was built in honor of a past teacher, Eileen Egan. This store also gives students the opportunity to learn what is it like to work and manage your own store. They partake in responsibilities such as keeping inventory and closing out the register after each class period. In the fall of 2005, a planetarium was built in the rear of the building. A greenhouse was also constructed in 2006. South's music department is led by James Fogarty, Kip Bonsignore and Lydia Leizman. South offers many music ensembles; chorus, orchestra, jazz band, Marching Band, concert band, Troubadors, Ars Musica, and Tri-M.The floors of classrooms are arranged by the type of classes held. The first floor is where all of the science rooms are, the second floor is where english and language classes are, and also includes the computer rooms, and the third floor is where the various math and social studies/history classes are.
1985 fire
On December 26, 1985, a fire occurred in the gymnasium, causing extensive damage and rendering the gym unusable for the second semester. Luckily, the fire occurred in the early morning after Christmas and no one was hurt. However, extensive and costly renovations were necessary to put the gym in order for the 1986-87 school year.
