Cheers to my husband, Christopher Smith, a volunteer driver for the Cumberland County Chapter No. 46 of the Disabled Americans Veterans, which provides transportation to veterans who have medical appointments at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Cheers to Joan Dayton and staff at Fayetteville's newest Christian school, Freedom Christian Academy! My son is thrilled with the low student-to-teacher ratios, variety of extracurricular activities, and family atmosphere at the school.

Stephen Saam recently received the Distinguished Graduate award at the U.S. Air Force ROTC Field Training Camp at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. The honor is awarded to the top two cadets in each flight. The camp prepares cadets to be officers in the Air Force.

What Jack Britt track coach Rick Stoker referred to as "the Dark Ages'' of the sport in Cumberland County are about to end. At a meeting earlier this week, the county schools' facilities committee approved a plan to begin upgrading the tracks at the 10 public senior high schools.
