CULLOWHEE — Nine Western North Carolina high school students recently bicycled 300 miles from Pennsylvania to the nation's capital, and another group canoed along the route of Lewis and Clark, all as part of the summer activities sponsored by Talent Search at Western Carolina University.

Probably very little about freshmen move-in day at Western Carolina University has changed over the years: the “nervous but excited” students, the teary-eyed, mostly just nervous parents following close behind, the authoritative, no-nonsense Resident Advisors directing their new underlings, and of course, the rows of suitcases and cardboard boxes lining the sidewalks.

Smoky Mountain High School is a public high school located in Sylva, North Carolina. The school is the successor of the former Sylva-Webster High School and Cullowhee High School, which consolidated in 1988.
Smoky Mountain High School is a part of the Jackson County School System. It is one of three high schools in the county. The other schools are Cherokee High School 9-12, and Kindergarten through 12th grade Blue Ridge School near Cashiers, North Carolina, serves students who live in the southern end of Jackson County.
The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
The current principal of Smoky Mountain High School is Jay Grissom.
The athletic sports mascot is the Mustang.
