- Athletics

Hoggard High School fields 24 varsity and junior varsity teams across 13 sports. All teams compete in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference as part of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
- The school mascot is the Viking, and the primary colors are blue and white.
- Football

The Hoggard Football team, the Vikings, won their sixth straight conference championship in 2007, led by Coach Scott Braswell. In the 2006 season, the Vikings went the furthest they had ever gone in the NCHSAA playoffs, getting to the Eastern finals in the fourth round, where they played against Greenville Rose High School. The Vikings lost by two points, 31-29.
- In 2007, the team surpassed its achievement from the year before and won the state championships with an undefeated record. Hoggard played the championship game against Mount Tabor and defeated them by a score of 28-0.

John T. Hoggard High School is known in its immediate area for its strong academic programs. It offers fourteen Advanced Placement courses and a substantial number of honors classes. In its class of 2007, 67% of graduating students went on to four-year colleges, and another 29% went on to two-year colleges. 90% of the class took the SAT, and the average math score was 545, while the average critical reading score was 524.

The Voyagers are Hoggard's choral ensemble. The Voyagers were established within the first year of Hoggard's existence and have consistently participated in The North Carolina Choral Festival.
- Quiz Bowl

John T. Hoggard High School is known being one of the top Quiz Bowl teams in the state and for its sudden entrance in the Quiz Bowl circuit in 2007. After winning the State Championship of the Public Library Quiz Bowl the previous year, Hoggard made strong showings in its first few tournaments, placing in several, and eventually achieving a First Place victory at a 2008 tournament in Salisbury, NC that qualified the team for the NAQT tournament in Chicago. Due to lack of funding, the team was unable to attend, and instead participated in the PACE National Scholastic Championship, where it placed 33rd in the nation. In 2009, the Hoggard Quiz Bowl traveled to the PACE NSC National competition at George Mason University and, in their first tournament appearance of the year, claimed 34th place in the nation.
- Science Olympiad

Hoggard's Science Olympiad team has had extremely good showings in recent years, having missed making it to the national level by one place in 2008 and 2009, and by two places in 2007. The Science Olympiad team is headed by Miranda Dungan, with help from other teachers from Hoggard's science department. The current president of Hoggard Science Olympiad is Vijay Gadani, with President-elect Nathan Hanson assisting. Vice Presidents include Charlie Wilson, Eric Whitmire, Gregg Godwin, and David Cutting.
- Bowling Club

Hoggard's Bowling Club has been in existence for over 50 years. Hoggard has never participated in any sanctioned competition in bowling, however, a meet with crosstown rival Laney High School is planned for later this year. The current president of Hoggard Bowling Club is Zack Shiro, with vice presidents Andrew Brewer and Tyler Phoenicie assisting.
