- Carlsbad High School is a public High School in Carlsbad, California. First opened in 1957, the high school is currently under consideration for redevelopment.
- Overview
-
Located in Carlsbad, California, a wealthy suburb of San Diego, Carlsbad High School is a beachfront school built in 1957. Carlsbad High School is renowned for its high level of academic success and graduate levels, with top students from each year attending many of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Although it is conveniently located within walking distance to the Carlsbad beach, the sprawling campus is in need of renovation due to old age; renovations are scheduled for Summer 2009.ls. Ths has led to a self-segregation between a large contingency of inner-city, minority (mostly Hispanic) students and affluent, high-achieving students from beachfront areas and other suburban enclaves in Carlsbad. This discrepancy is most evident in Honors and Advanced Placement courses, where most students are from similar backgrounds and there are few minorities. Through its booming AVID program, administrators and teachers are trying to change the student makeup of the more advanced classes.
- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the high school 8/11/2006 [1]to announce his plans for the future of funding and education in California's schools. The famous Carlsbad Gap is located on its campus, which is featured in one of Tony Hawk's skateboarding games.
- Carlsbad high school is also well-known for extracurricular and athletic excellence: examples include Lancer Dancers, the Carlsbad Marching Lancers, Wind Ensemble, the CHS Football Team, Waterpolo Team, and Swim team.
- Campus
-
Carlsbad High School's campus definitely reflects how many years this school has been established. The campus is a constant target for graffiti at night. This campus was not established for the 3,000+ students that currently attend Carlsbad High. The classrooms lack sufficient desks for students and the classrooms and trailers are all very old. Thankfully, in 2008, Carlsbad High School has began a new renovation for the whole campus starting with the football field. This renovation's date of completion is not set in stone, but we are hoping that it finishes in 2013, but construction dates are often delayed. For students of the class of 2009 and 2010 they will unfortunately not have any of their "home" football games at home, but instead have them at nearby revival high schools. Carlsbad High's students flood the nearby streets with their cars because there is not a parking lot available. We all hope that in 2014 when the school is completely finished, the campus will not only look, but feel like a new home to the students that will be attending the school.
