School Notes:
  • Garfield Heights High School is a public high school located in Garfield Heights, Ohio, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It is part of the Garfield Heights City School District.
  • However, enrollment is expected to slightly increase over the next two years.
  • History: The school has recently received an "Effective" rating from the state of Ohio, the second highest rating a school can achieve. The district is fed by its own middle school and by five nearby parochial schools.
  • The school's athletic teams are known as the bulldogs and mainly belong to the Lake Erie League Erie Division, which also features Shaw High School, Lorain Admiral King High School, Warrensville High School, Bedford High School and Lorain Southview High School. Starting in the 2007-2008 school year, the Bulldogs will move to an 18-team "superconference" known as the Northeast Ohio Conference. The school fields athletic teams in football, wrestling, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, basketball, softball, and hockey. The Ohio High School Athletic Association approved bowling as a sanctioned sport starting in the 2006-2007 school year. The 2005-2006 bowling team won an unofficial state championship.
  • The school also contains several student associations/clubs. The Students of Service program provides community service throughout the community and school. Other programs include: Art Club, Book Club, Tech Crew, Computer Club, among others. The GHHS Academic Challenge team falls under this category as well. They are in their 21st season, having won 18 league championships and approaching 1,000 wins in the history of the program. The team is the most successful of any team in school history, with a winning percentage near .800.
  • The current building in use was approved to be built in the year 2000 and was finished and opened in the middle of the 2003-2004 school year. The current middle school was built in 1962 and transitioned into the middle school after the high school was moved to the new complex. The former middle school was demolished to make room for the soon-to-be-built music and arts wing.
