The Marcus High School band surpassed even its own expectations last weekend. Marcus placed fourth out of 92 teams at the Bands of America Grand Nationals, which took place Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

As expected, the Berlin Redcoats will face the Avon Falcons in the Class M football semifinals Tuesday night at Muzzy Field in Bristol (6:30 p.m.). The game is Avon’s home game but will be played at the historic field because the field at Avon High School does not meet CIAC qualifications for a state playoff game.

AVON -- Just over seven years ago, Matt Nakon lost his wife, Karen P. Nakon, to breast cancer. After Karen's death, he started the Nakon Foundation which, after seven years, has become a much bigger deal.

Avon High School is a secondary school for grades 9-12 located in Avon, Ohio. Its enrollment neared 1000 as of the 2008-2009 school year, with a 2008 graduating class of 215. The school colors are purple and gold. The school mascot is the Eagle. The Avon Eagles are part of the West Shore Conference.
