School Notes:
  • Bend Senior High School is the oldest high school located in Bend, Oregon, United States. The school opened in 1904, but did not graduate its first class of seniors (three students) until 1909. The original building was located downtown on Bond Street, where the Deschutes County Courthouse now stands. Its mascot is the Lava Bears. Its colors are Blue and Gold.
  • Athletics: Its athletic teams are in the 5A division, in the IMC (Inner Mountain Conference).
  • Bend High's sports teams include:
  • Football, Mens Soccer, Women's Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball, Water Polo, Mens Basketball, Women's Basketball, Nordic Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Wrestling, Powderpuff Football, Tennis, Equestrian, Swimming, Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, Track, Bowling, Women's Golf, Men's Golf.
  • Clubs and Extracurricular Activities: Bend's clubs include:
  • Navy ROTC, Ultimate Frisbee, Sparrow Club, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, Worship Group, Dynamics, Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, Dance Team, Cheerleading, Chess Club, Student Council, Speech Team, Paintball, Bearfoot Players, Art Society, Link Crew, DECA.
  • Student Life: Students are on a four block schedule. At lunch, Juniors and Seniors usually go off campus to many popular places in Bend, Oregon. These places include Los Jalepenos burritos, Safeway, Pizza Mondo, Del Taco, Baja Fresh, Costco Deli, and many other places in Bend.
  • Sadie Hawkins Incident: In the 2004-2005 school year, the school held their yearly sadie hawkins dance. Students began engaging in "inappropriate dancing" including freak dancing, and grinding. After the third warning from school administrators, the school shut down the dance two hours early and immediately sent all students home. The incident made headline news around the nation, and set the standard that many schools have for school dances and how school administrators should enforce dance policy.
  • Senior Pranks: In 2000, seniors released three pigs throughout the school. Each pig bore a number on the sides of their skins. The numbers were "1" "2", and "4". The missing "3" was itself a prank to keep staff believing there was a third pig they didn't yet find. The students involved were suspended for one day, and were forced to clean the hallways of all the damage, dirt, and feces the pigs had left behind.
  • In 2005, students spilled a 10-gallon barrel of ink on the front steps of the new school commons and covered it with bails of hay. Because the new addition of the school was less than two years old at the time, the principal and superintendent of the district were very furious with the vandalism and offered a $1000 reward to information leading to the arrest of the students. School continued as normal, and no students were ever charged.
  • Scheduling Debate: At the end of November 2006, Bend High proposed a change in student scheduling from two terms a year to three that would take effect during the 2007-2008 school year. The proposal was supposed to "allow more teaching time to students by having classes every day and removing rotator blocks".
  • Two weeks after Bend High proposed the change, Summit High School agreed to join Bend High in their proposal. A small number of students were angry with this proposal, the concern was that the change would interfere with their graduation requirements or would be too much work to adjust for current students.
  • In Mid-December, the proposal was dropped because of the computers that scheduled classes. The systems were incompatible with scheduling three terms a year.
