School Notes:
  • La Quinta High School is one of four public high schools, grades 9-12, in the Desert Sands Unified School District (www.dsusd.us). It is located in the City of La Quinta in Riverside County, California, specifically in the Coachella Valley between Indian Wells and Indio. It has a current enrollment of approximately 3200. It won a California Distinguished Schools award, in 1999 and 2003, from the California Department of Education [1] for its above-average academic performance and standards.
  • History
  • La Quinta High School was built in 1994 but fully completed by 1996. In its first year it had an enrollment of approximately 600 students with only grades 9-10 and in 2008, with grades 9-12, it now exceeds 3,000 students making it the largest high school in the Coachella Valley. The campus is crowded and portable classrooms have been added to accommodate all the students. The over crowding will change when the newest high school number in the Desert Sands School District opens in the fall of 2009 (Shadow Hills High School). The current number of students in LQHS is cut in half at 1600.
  • La Quinta High has obtained several awards, including a California Distinguished School Award, in 1999 and 2003, which is awarded by the California Department of Education to California schools each year that best represent and exemplify quality education programs. Since the 2001-2002 academic year it has also been an International Baccalaureate School. After Principal Matthew Bugg's departure to be principal at a new elementary school, former English teacher and vice principal, Donna Salazar, became the new principal.
  • Academics
  • LQHS offers Advanced Placement, IB, and honors classes. There is also a Health Academy, Public Service Academy, Education Pathway, and Culinary Arts program to immerse students in vocational work in preparation for life after high school. LQHS is an alternative to both Palm Desert High School and Indio High School when it comes to this variety of elective courses available.
  • La Quinta High School competes with Palm Desert High School as one of the Coachella Valley's top institutions focused on having a rigorous curriculum and high expectations.
  • In 2006, the high school was ranked 617th in Newsweek's "The Complete List: 1,200 Top U.S. Schools" which factored the number of Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2005 divided by the number of graduating seniors, along with the socio-economic background of the student body at the school.
  • Its feeder schools are La Quinta Middle School, John Glenn Middle School of International Studies]] and Colonel Mitchell Paige Middle School but includes a small porportion from Indio Middle School where the majority of high-school destined students go to Indio High School and increasingly to Shadow Hills High School instead of highly populated LQHS.
  • Clubs
  • LQHS gives access to many clubs and organizations on campus including:
  • Athletics
  • Sports at LQHS include wrestling, ice hockey, tennis, swimming, waterpolo, baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, golf, rugby union and cross country. La Quinta High is also the only school in the Coachella Valley with a club and rugby union program. La Quinta High School's primary rival, and not just in athletics, is Palm Desert High School. La Quinta High School was the first school in the Coachella Valley to ever win two consecutive CIF football championships and made the finals in 2006. The athletic director at the school, Dan Armstrong, is also the head football coach. The school's wrestling team has become a powerhouse in the Coachella Valley and CIF. They are the five-time defending Desert Valley League champions (2005-2009) and the 2009 CIF Inland Division Wrestling Champions, the first CIF wrestling championship in school history. The school also had its first CIF individual champions in 2009, Jarad Watts at 130 pounds and Alex Razo at 135 pounds. The Ice Hockey program was started in 2008 with the opening of the Ice Garden in La Quinta.
