Sixth-grader Bailee Kraemer invited a special guest to Patton Middle School's Veterans Day assembly - her grandpa, Jack Hathaway Jr. Serving in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1997, he spent part of his tour in a World War II-era submarine off the coast of Vietnam.

Local organizations plan to honor veterans and active duty military personnel with a variety of activities tied to the Veterans Day holiday. The holiday is celebrated on Nov. 11. It originally was called "Armistice Day" in honor of the armistice that ended World War 1 on Nov. 11, 1918.

Former Patton Middle School Principal Jim Torgerson died Monday, Feb. 16, at his home in Oregon City. He died of natural causes. He was 54. No public services are planned.

Unable to negotiate a mutually acceptable package of concessions with its teaching staff - and unwilling to accept the union's offer of smaller raises and delayed step increases - the McMinnville School District will be cutting about 40 teaching positions this school year.

Two-thirds of the schools in Yamhill County - and two-thirds of schools across Oregon - met federal Adequate Yearly Progress goals for 2008-09, according to preliminary results released Tuesday by the state Department of Education.
