JOHNS ISLAND -- Haut Gap Middle School enrolled 211 students last year, but only 23 of them were white. This year, the predominantly black, high-poverty school has nearly twice as many white students, and the growth in diversity can be attributed to its new Advanced Studies Magnet program.

JOHNS ISLAND -- Thieves made off with $100,000 in copper for construction of the new Haut Gap Middle School on Bohicket Road this week. Someone moved a tractor, cut the lock on a door to the school and removed the copper from two rooms, police said.
