School Notes:
  • James F. Byrnes High School was founded in the 1950s in Duncan, South Carolina, and was named after the statesman James F. Byrnes. It fits under the South Carolina High School League classification of a AAAA school. It is the 19th largest school in the state, and is three schools away from being designated as Big 16 school (Class AAAAA). Currently, the school houses a variety of athletic teams, a nationally recognized marching band, and an AFJROTC unit (SC-932). It is in Spartanburg County School District 5.
  • AFJROTC: The Byrnes AFJROTC unit was founded in 1993. The program has performed at many community events, such as the Brave's baseball game, and other events, including parades. Byrnes AFJROTC has won various awards and is distinctively the most well-known program in the state of South Carolina.
  • Academic Teams: The Model United Nations team has won many awards at local and national competitions, and is ranked among the best in the state. The Byrnes Technology Student Association has received a myriad number of state and national awards. This year, all six South Carolina TSA state officer positions are seated by students from Byrnes. The two clubs available to all students (if qualifications are met) are the National Beta Club and the National Honors Society. Byrnes also has a mathematics team, an academic team, and a science bowl team. The Math team girls recently went to the Columbia College Math Day for girls, winning the Level 1 and 2 Jeopardy games, and its team members also received individual awards.
  • Advanced Placement: Advanced Placement courses enable students to complete college-level work while in high school. If students pass the AP exams, they may receive college credit (see individual college/university web sites for official credit policies). In the 2005–2006 school year, Bynes had a record number of AP scholars. There were seven AP Scholars with Distinction, five AP Scholars with Honor, and eleven AP Scholars.
  • Pre-AP/Honors classes: Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 take Pre-AP/Honors classes in order to prepare for the rigors of Advanced Placement courses. As of now, there is some controversy concerning whether upper-level honors classes should be offered for students not desiring to take the respective AP courses. Such questionable courses are: Differentiable Calculus, Integral Calculus, Statistics, Biology II, Chemistry II, Algebra-Based Physics, Calculus-Based Physics, English 4 (British Literature), English 5 (World Literature), U.S. History, U.S. Government and Politics, and Economics (Macro and Micro).
