- Hillwood Comprehensive High School is a public high school located in Nashville, Tennessee and is part of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools District. The school mascot is the Hilltopper and the school colors are kelly green, black and white. Hillwood was built in 1959. In the aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education, many students from predominantly African-American neiborhoods of North Nashville were bused to Hillwood to integrate Nashville Schools. On July 8, 2008 the MNPS School Board removed the non-contiguous neighborhoods from the Hillwood Zone, back to the nearly predominant Black Pearl Cohn Comprehensive High School in North Nashville.
- Academics
-
Hillwood offers all levels of academics. Standard and honors level courses are available along with Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. Hillwood became one of the first IB World Schools in Tennessee in February 2004. It offers the Diploma Programme. Additionally, the AVID (meaning Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is available. The school is also renowned as a pilot school for the "small learning communities" concept. Additionally, Hillwood is a Technology Site Demonstration school.
- Athletics
-
There are many sports available for students to participate in. The Topper Athletic Club (TAC) is a parent/faculty organization that helps support all sports teams. They generally meet once a month. All sporting events are overseen by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association . Hillwood has had moderate success in athletics. The football team was State Championship contender in the 1990s and early 2000s before their move from AAAA (4A) to AAAAA (5A), which is Tennessee's highest class. The football team is currently coached by Mose Phillips, Jr., who was a starting quarterback at rival Hillsboro High School, and starting fullback at the University of Tennessee. The wrestling team is known for their dominance in the 1970s under famed coach G.P. West, whom the Brentwood Invitational (G.P. West Bruin Invitational) is named for, as well as its many State Champions and the Hillwood Invitaional. Also the Wrestling team had a great run in the mid 1990's under Al Posnack. His best year was the 1994-1995 campaign with a 13-1 record. As of 2009, Hillwood has dropped their wrestling program under coach Michael Henderson due to lack of participation. It is uncertain whether or not the program will return for the 2009-2010 season. The baseball team accumulated Hillwood's first State Championship in any sport when they won the TSSAA AAA State Championship over Maryville High School in 1977. The Freshmen Girls Volleyball team found recent success when they won the Nashville City Championship in 2007. The Basketball team is known for famed player Charles Hathaway who was a McDonald's All-American in 1996 and went on to play four years at the University of Tennessee. In addition, the boys basketball team was at one time coached by current Northern Illinois University head coach and long time Colorado Buffaloes head coach Ricardo Patton.
