School Notes:
  • Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS) is a secondary school located at 2900 Community Avenue in La Crescenta-Montrose, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The school is a part of the Glendale Unified School District.
  • The school serves the communities of La Crescenta, north Glendale, and the GUSD portion of La Cañada Flintridge. Previously known as Clark Middle School, CVHS opened its doors for the first time as a high school in September 1961. The athletics teams are known as the Falcons.
  • Crescenta Valley received a National Blue Ribbon School award in 2000 and a California Distinguished School award in 2005. Crescenta Valley received a Bravo Award for excellence in the arts from Los Angeles County in 2005.
  • School Newspaper: CV's school-wide publication is The Falcon. The paper is distributed every two weeks.
  • Visual and Performing Arts Department: Crescenta Valley High School's VAPA department includes a number of Art classes (sculpture, paint, ceramics), Dance Classes, Instrumental Music classes, Vocal/Choral Music classes, and Theater Classes.
  • Spring Musical: Every Spring, the Theater, Choral, and Instrumental Music departments join forces to produce the annual "Spring Musical." This tradition has lasted for the past 10 years. Some former Shows include: Little Shop of Horrors in 1997; The Wiz in 1998; Bye Bye Birdie in 1999; The Pajama Game in 2000; The Music Man in 2001; West Side Story in 2002; Kiss Me, Kate in 2003; Fiddler on the Roof in 2004; Guys and Dolls in 2005 and Crazy for You in 2006. It was announced on November 21, 2006 that Pippin will be the musical performed this upcoming March, 2007.
  • The Director for the shows has been R. Brent Beerman from start, Kathi Chaplar-Beerman (an alumni of CVHS) was originally hired to produce these shows with Beerman as a Vocal Director (Chaplar-Beerman has perfect pitch). She also used to conduct for the pit orchestra until Mathew Schick was hired in the fall of 2001. Chaplar-Beerman is credited by the students as a "perfect woman." Since 2001, Schick has conducted the orchestra. To relieve Chaplar of even more stress, Claire Rowan came into the picture as another Vocal Director from 2003 to 2004, after which Tammi Alderman joined the Musical Team in 2005 for Guys and Dolls as a Vocal "Coach." It wasn't until 2006, when they performed George and Ira Gerschwin's Crazy for You that Alderman became the only Vocal Director. Chaplar is now referred to as the Artistic Director, designing, painting, and even building some of (if not most) the sets, crediting to her "perfectness."
  • There have been two Official Choreographers for the musicals. Originally, Beerman and Chaplar used students as "Dance Captains" who would work as a team to come up with choreography. Elizabeth Weaver, an English Teacher at CVHS, was the choreographer for the musicals between 2002 and 2004 until she had to pull out so she could focus on getting her master's degree, which she now has. In 2005, Julie Kay Stallcup stepped in and has choreographed 3 musicals (see below) at CV. Talya Bershtel (CVHS alumnus class of 2004) was Stallcup's Assistant Choreographer in 2005 and 2006. She is not likely to continue this because Stallcup has left The Vibe Dance Studio to create her own, Revolution Dance Center. Hilary Morris will become the next Assistant Choreographer for the musical Pippin.
  • Advanced Drama Program: The Advanced Drama Class performs a Fall Play every fall, as well as a Spring Play every spring with Coffee Talks placed randomly throughout the year. List of Some Fall Plays: The Foreigner; House of Blue Leaves; Noises Off; Arsenic and Old Lace; Romeo and Juliet the Western; The Crucible; Any Number Can Die; The Good Doctor; A Christmas Carol; Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; Up the Down Staircase; Grease†; Get Smart.
  • †Beerman and Chaplar, chaplar is good, decided to do a musical in 2005 with the Advanced Drama Class, which Julie Kay Stallcup choreographed.
  • Vocal Music Department: Sometimes called "Falcon Music", the Vocal Music Department is home to 6 Choirs: A Cappella Women, A Cappella Men, Women's Ensemble, Charismatics (a Chamber Choir), A Cappella Choir (A Cappella Women, A Cappella Men, and Charismatics), and the Valley Blues Show Choir.
  • The Vocal Music Department has seen at least 4 different choir directors, the most famous of whom is Shirley Nute. Also, Dr. Kerry Burtis, Claire Rowan, and current director Tammi Alderman have directed the program.
  • The department has also traveled across the United States competing against other High Schools. They have traveled to Washington D.C., Hawaii, Colorado, and in the Spring of 2007 they will be traveling to Europe.
  • CV has 3 "annual" concerts through the Vocal Music Department. Feast of Lights in December. Spring Concert usually in March and the Pops Concert in June.
  • This past school year's Pops Concert theme was "The Times They Are A-Changin'", using mainly 1960's music. For the 2007 Pops Concert, the theme will be a Broadway/Musical Theme, singing showtunes and medleys from different musicals.
  • The Valley Blues Show Choir also participated in Disneyland's Magic Music Days Festival on June 23rd and 24th, 2006 and plan to do it again in 2007.
