  • Steele Canyon High School is a public charter high school located in the San Diego East County community of Spring Valley, California, USA. Opened in 2000, the school serves students in grades nine through grade twelve and was part of the Grossmont Union High School District until July 1, 2007.
  • History
  • 2000 Fall: Steele Canyon High School opens. 2002 Fall: Steele Canyon High School begins to compete in varsity level sports. SCHS went on to win two league titles that year - boy's golf and girl's tennis. 2003 Fall: The class of 2007 begins its freshman year marking the first year of operation for Steele Canyon High School where all four grade levels are present. October: The severity of the Cedar Fire causes Steele Canyon High School to close for a week and their first-ever planned Homecoming is cancelled. 2004 Spring: Steele Canyon High School graduates its first class. 2006 Fall: Steele Canyon High School votes to become a charter school.
  • 2007 1 July: Steele Canyon High School becomes a California Public Charter School 20-28 October: Steele Canyon serves as an evacuation center for San Diego residents threatened by the Harris fire which was one of the larger October 2007 California wildfires. The fire later threatens the school itself. Firefighters, with helicopter support, defend the school by using a back burning technique on the hills nearby. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visits Steele Canyon High School and gives a press conference addressing the fires.

  • Steele Canyon High School has 130 employees. All employees hold the proper credentials and certificates to be more than qualified for the positions that they hold.

  • Steele Canyon Cougars compete in the Grossmont South League Conference and the San Diego Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
  • The school has teams that compete in CIF in the following sports: baseball (boys), basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football (boys), golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball (girls), swim and dive, tennis, track, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling (boys).
  • Since the Fall of 2002 (the first year of varsity-level competition), SCHS has won 26 league titles and four CIF championships:
