  • Garland High School is a public secondary school located in Garland, Texas (USA). Garland High School enrolls students in grades 9-12 and is a part of the Garland Independent School District. The school is a member of the International Baccalaureate program and AP program, and is known for its football team, the Garland Owls.
  • History
  • Garland High School was founded circa 1903.
  • Academic programs
  • The school attracts many students from around the city because of its variety of rigorous academic programs such as the IB program and long history.
  • IB programs
  • Garland High School houses the rigorous IB program, which was founded in 1988 celebrating it's 20th in 2008. It is one of only 45 schools in Texas which offers the program.
  • CAS - CAS stands for Creativity, Action, and Service. To receive the IB diploma, each candidate must complete an approximate of 150 CAS hours (50 creative, 50 action, 50 service) and a written Extended Essay. The GHS IB faculty and administration expect students to acquire an understanding of community and world affairs and an appreciation of different cultures through both academic and extra-curricular activities.
  • IB Art - Students study art and design and are evaluated towards their final years on the merits of their Investigation Workbooks or art portfolio. This is followed by an art show and allows for students to independently evaluate themselves during the process.

  • The School of Performing Arts was approved by the GISD School Board. Graduates of the School of Performing Arts receive the Performing Arts Endorsement, sequence of courses designed for the artistically gifted/talented student and offers the opportunity to concentrate on the Performing Arts and gain proficiency in chosen areas of concentration during the high school years, much as a Music or Theatre Major does in college.
  • Upon completion of the prescribed course of study, a Performing Arts Endorsement shall be awarded to the student. This endorsement will accompany their official transcript, along with an explanation of the endorsement and its criteria, and will become applicable to university study or future professional endeavors. The Performing Arts Endorsement has been reviewed by both university and secondary administration. It has received praise for both its inclusiveness and its practicality.

  • In its annual area high school rankings D Magazine ranked GHS as the 41st best high school in the Dallas-Ft. Worth
  • Newsweek ranked Garland High School as the 306th best high school in the United States in 2008.
  • Athletics
  • Garland High School is also well known for its varsity football team who has made the playoffs 12 out of the last 14 years and have won the state championship a total of 4 times. In 2006, Garland made it to the semi-finals of the state championship only to fall short to the state champion Cedar Hill Longhorns, 31-24, in a game that ended with a goal line stand by the Longhorns on Cedar Hill's 1 yard line. They were the 7th team in the school's history to make it to the state semifinals.
  • The Lady Owls Varsity Softball team is another well known Garland sports team, winning back to back state championships in 2006 and 2007 and advancing to the title series in 2005. The Lady Owls Softball team is the only team in Texas High School Softball History to win back-to-back state titles in the 5A classification.
  • Garland High School is the only school in the Garland ISD to have won an athletic state championship, having won six:
  • Football- 1956 (Class AAA), 1963 (Class AAAA), 1964 (Class AAAA), 1999 (Class AAAAA Division II)

  • After the Garland Owl football team defeats an opponent at an away game, the fans, cheerleaders, Dashing Debs, Mighty Owl Band, Bellguards, and the football team will arrive in the Garland Downtown Square to celebrate the victory.
