School Notes:
  • Humble High School is a secondary school located in Humble, Texas, United States.
  • Humble High School (HHS), which serves grades 9 through 12, serves the city of Humble, the Moonshine Hill area of Houston, and unincorporated communities north of Beltway 8. The campus serves the entire Humble area, and a small part of Atascocita, an unincorporated community five miles outside of Humble. The school opened in 1929 as Charles Bender High School, but became Humble High in its present location at 1700 Wilson Road in 1965.
  • Until 2007, ninth grade students attended the Humble Ninth Grade Campus, located adjacent to the Humble High campus at 1131 Wilson Road. That building was transformed into Ross Sterling Middle School in 2007, and the ninth graders moved into the newly completed freshman annex at the high school.
  • The Principal
  • Charles Ned was named acting principal of Humble High School upon the passing of Principal Larry Johnson in December 2007. Ned had been serving as associate principal of the building, but took over for the remainder of the 07-08 school year. In the summer of 2008, the Humble ISD Board named Ned as the permanent, full time Principal of Humble High School. Dr. Doug Monk, who had been an assistant principal, filled Ned's spot as associate principal. Under his leadership, the students, parents, faculty, and overall Humble community coped with the inconveniences of the final phase of construction renovation on the HHS campus, and noticeable growth is also being seen in TAKS scores. Before arriving at HHS, Ned was an administrator at the former Humble Ninth Grade Campus as well as Kingwood High.
  • Mission Statement
  • "Our Humble High School Community will engage students through a challenging, supportive, caring, and collaborative learning environment that will ensure the academic, social, and emotional growth necessary for our students to be productive members of an international society.
  • Student enrollment
  • As of around 2008, the student enrollment at Humble High is made up of 40 percent Hispanic, 20 percent Caucasian, 38 percent African-American, and 2 percent Asian.
  • Fifty-four percent of the students qualify for free and reduced priced meals. The student population has two home languages. These languages, in order of student enrollment, are English and Spanish. Humble High has several funded programs which focus on helping “at risk” students and the special needs of all students, such as Advancement Via Individual Determination. This assistance is provided by having both during and after-school programs with specialized instruction. They also host a very prestigious program known as the International Baccalaureate Program. Humble High also has a gifted and talented program for identified students as well as sheltered instructional classes for students new to the country.
  • Humble ISD will open its newest high school, Summer Creek HS, in August 2009. Humble High's enrollment is expected to drastically decrease due to Summer Creek taking in most of its enrollment from several communities that line Beltway 8. HHS could become a 4A school as a result of the opening of SCHS.
  • Attendance and Mobility
  • Student attendance rates at Humble High School have remained steady over the past few years. Humble High has an average daily attendance of 94 percent. Enrollment numbers decrease approximately by 8 percent annually. The mobility rate is currently at about 20 percent.

  • History
  • Renovation
  • The first Humble High School class graduated in 1911 consisting of three students. The Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges accredited Humble High School in 1927. In 1965, due to growth, a new Humble High School campus opened at 1700 Wilson. The first class to graduate from that campus graduated in 1968.
  • Fight Song
  • The fight song for HHS is as follows:
Wildcats - W-I-L-D-C-A-T-S - we are the Wildcats.
We want the world to see another V-I-C-T-O-R-Y.
Victory is waiting for us, watching for us, we are the Wildcats.
Our boys are dressed in purple and white
And we are gonna win tonight. Fight!
  • Wildcat Alma Mater
  • In dear old Humble High School
Beneath the Texas sun,Where when our work is finished
Our time is spent in fun.
    We love to work, we love to play;
Spending many a long, happy day.The faculty that aids us to reach a higher aim
Will share with us the glory of Humble's future fame.
We always like to strive and try
To keep our high school's ideals high.We strive together, work
    and we help each other true;
    In basketball and football,
    In track and tennis, too.
We crown ourselves with glory bright
For the fame of the purple and white. And in those later days
When our lives have just begun
    We will always remember
What our dear school has done.
We hate to think the time is nigh
When we part from dear old Humble High.
  • Special Programs
  • Humble High School offers several foreign language courses including Spanish, French, Latin, and Sign Language.
Although German was offered in the past, after a decrease in the course's interest, the course was removed from the curriculum.
Currently only Spanish is offered in the IB level, and AP courses are taught in Spanish and French.
  • International Baccalaureate
  • The International Baccalaureate program was introduced to Humble High in the beginning of the 2007-2008 year, after interviewing applicants a year earlier. The 2009 class will be the first IB students to graduate from Humble High School with an IB diploma.
Here is a snapshot of the 2007-08 IB program at Humble High School:
  • 83 total students participating; 37 juniors in the full Diploma Program, (note: state average for full-Diploma students who participate in first year Diploma Program is 12); 21 10th grade students (4 pre-baccalaureate courses imbedded in their schedules), 25 ninth grade students (3 pre-baccalaureate courses imbedded in their schedules)
  • 20% of students, grades 9-11, are transfer students; 2 from KHS, 14 from AHS; largest number of transfers in ninth grade.
  • Before school started, the IB staff hosted an IB Welcome Wagon for all incoming students, grades 9-11. The event gave the entire IB faculty a chance to work with the students outside of the classroom as well as help the students get to know one another. The students had an opportunity to tour the building and complete some service projects for the campus, one of which allowed the 11th graders to plant trees by the HHS baseball fields. In addition to this student event, the master schedule was able to accommodate the program's structure and the campus facilities are serving the staff and students well. Finally, the IB staff is working on building increased capacity for the program among their individual departments as well as seeking ways to expand the IB program and its philosophy beyond the IB classroom.
  • The HHS IB program takes service learning and community service seriously, as it is one of the main tenets of the IB vision. This year, the HHS IB program will team with Humble High, Eagle Springs Elementary, and Kingwood Park High in an effort to raise awareness and increase participation in The Race for the Cure.
  • 15 HHS IB students will represent HHS at the state-wide CAS Conference in September. This event will be held at the Awty International School in September and will be followed by an international college fair for 10 and 11 grade IB students.
  • Several of the IB students have elected to participate in an international summer travel experience during the summer of 2008. These students will travel to Costa Rica for a 10 day experience that will allow them to practice their second language of study, participate in a Bio-Tour exploring the different climates found in Costa Rica, and spend a day at a Costa Rican day school where the students will bring donated school supplies and materials.
  • Besides IB, the school also offers the AVID program, a program designed to aid economically disadvantaged, and academically average first-generation students of both elementary and high schools into college.
  • Humble High is the only high school within Humble ISD to offer the cosmetology course.
  • Wildcats
  • Humble High’s first drill team became a reality Wednesday Sept. 15, 1971 when its charter members were chosen. Three judges selected 24 regular members and one alternate of the 45 girls that tried out. Tryouts consisted of a pom-pon and a tambourine routine. Purple skirts and white blouses set off by purple vests and hats and white boots constituted the uniform worn by theWildcatdets.
