School Notes:
  • Mesquite High School is a high school in Mesquite, Texas. The school serves the central portion of Mesquite and a small portion of Balch Springs.
  • Mesquite High, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Mesquite Independent School District. The total enrollment in 2002 was 2562; the school is therefore under the UIL AAAAA division. The Stormy the Skeeter is the school mascot, and the school colors are maroon and white.
  • History: Mesquite High School was the first high school opened in the Mesquite Independent School District. L hall was built durning the Great Depression and has a memorial plaque to commemorate the workers.
  • Athletics: The school fields several athletic teams in UIL 5A competition, including a football team that won the 5A Division I State Championship in 2001.
  • Standard dress: All students at Mesquite High are required to dress according to a standardized dress code (similar to a school uniform) as of 2005; the code is at all Mesquite ISD middle and high schools.
  • Feeder patterns: The following elementary schools feed into Mesquite High School: Black, Gentry (south of the creek and west of Wilkinson Drive), Gray (east of Pioneer), Hanby, Mackey (north of Lasater Road), Moss, and Shaw.
  • Agnew, A.C. New, and Wilkinson Middle Schools feed into Mesquite High School.
  • Notable alumni: Dusty Mangum - place kicker for the Texas Longhorns - kicked the winning field goal in the 2005 Rose Bowl, the first time the Rose Bowl has ever been decided by a field goal as time expired.
  • Rivalry: Mesquite High School's rival is North Mesquite High School. The rivalry dates back to when North Mesquite was founded in 1969. The school was the first to split from Mesquite High, which was then the only high school in the city, and thus the rivalry started.
  • Although Mesquite High Urban Legend states the rivalry began when a group of pranksters ran a horse's head, after painting it blue, up the North Mesquite flagpole (NMHS's mascot is a blue and white Stallion). North Mesquite however claims the rivalry began when their chihuahua mascot was kidnapped and killed by a group of Mesquite students.
