  • Dobie, which was named after Texas author and educator J. Frank Dobie, opened in 1968 (at 11111 Beamer Road, Houston, 77089). A new campus opened at its current address in 2003.
  • The school mascots are Louie and Lucy the Longhorns and the colors are burnt orange and white. A friendly rivalry has developed with nearby, and recently founded, Pasadena Memorial High School.

  • In 2002, the team made national news when it disputed its loss to Lubbock High School in the state championship competition. The debate arose when there were questions about the scoring methods used in some of the competition's events. Both Dobie and Lubbock prepared for national competition in Phoenix, Arizona as the lawsuit developed. The Texas Supreme Court ruled that the courts should not be involved in the administrative decision of a private organization and the Texas Academic Decathlon awarded Lubbock the state title. It was the first time a team outside of California or Texas had won at nationals.
