- Alleghany High School is a public secondary school in Alleghany County, VA, United States. It is part of Alleghany County Public Schools and is located on 210 Mountaineer Drive. Though the school has a Covington mailing address, it is actually about ten miles east of Covington City, and about two miles west of Low Moor.
- History

Alleghany High School's current building opened in 1963 as Alleghany County High School. The school's colors were red, white, and Columbia blue, but the mascot was known as the Colt.
- In 1983, Clifton Forge High School, located in nearby Clifton Forge City closed down, and students from there were consolidated with ACHS forming the current Alleghany High School. Also as a result of the consolidation, Alleghany's mascot changed to the Mountaineer as it is today, as this was the mascot of the former Clifton Forge High School.
- In 2005, the Alleghany County School Board began holding meetings with the public and also started negotiations with contractors about the possibility of building a new Alleghany High School building. The current high school is located on top of a floodplain which has narrowly escaped flooding in recent years, and current resources at Alleghany are strained.

Alleghany High School offers a variety of classes from Algebra to Marine Biology. The four core subjects are English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Each subject includes different levels (B, A, Accelerated, and AP), depending on grade level and class. The credit requirements for a standard diploma are 22 standard credits and 6 verified credits. Advanced diploma credit requirements are 24 standard credits, and 9 verified credits. Foreign Language class credits are not required for a standard diploma.
- Alleghany High School also offers classes through Jackson River Technical Center, Jackson River Governor's School, and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.
- Graduates from Alleghany are accepted to many prestigious colleges and universities all over Virginia and the US. Some of these include the College of William and Mary, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, James Madison University, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Radford University, the University of Mary Washington, Virginia Military Institute, Roanoke College, Bridgewater College, Randolf Macon College, North Carolina State University, Marshall University, Liberty University, Jefferson College of Heath Sciences, Boston University, Westpoint, Naval, and Air Force Academies, and even Ivy League schools such as Brown and Cornell. Graduates go on to become strong community members, leaders, and successful businessmen and women.

Alleghany High School is a fully accredited high school based on the Standards of Learning tests in Virginia. The average SAT score in 2007 for Alleghany was a 1000 (492 in Verbal; 508 in Math).

The mascot is a mountaineer (or more commonly used - "Mountie") and the sports teams currently play in the AA Blue Ridge District and Region III.
- Basketball

The Mountaineers have recently been best known for their boys and girls basketball teams, which have each advanced in Region III competition in the past few years.
- In the 2007 season, senior Sami Jo Salyers was the most recent player inducted into the 1000 Point Club for scoring a career 1000+ points for the Lady Mounties varsity basketball team.
- Baseball

Most recently in the 2008 season, the Mountaineer varsity baseball team advanced all the way to the AA State tournament, picking up Blue Ridge District and Region III titles along the way, but losing their second game of the season to the Powhatan Indians in the AA State Championship. The team broke many school records, including most wins in a season, and was the first team in any sport to go all the way to the State finals since the school became Alleghany High School in 1984 and the only baseball team to do so since 1975 when the team lost to Turner Ashby in the championship at Casey Field.

The Alleghany Mountie varsity softball team has made it to Regionals for the past three years (2005, 2006, 2007). The highlight of the year 2007 was when sophomore Hollee Warlitner received Player of the Year, being the first ever recipient from the Lady Mounties Softball team.

The Alleghany Mountaineers varsity volleyball team's most recent successful season was in 2006.

Recently, in both 2006 and 2008, the boys' varsity soccer team has gone to Region III play. The 2008 season team beat out the 2006 season team in recording the most wins the team has ever had in a season.In 2007, girls' varsity soccer saw several girls on the All-Blue Ridge District Team.

In 2007 and 2008 the girls cross country team won at the Blue Ridge District level.

Alleghany wrestling team is hoping to come out this year with a bang..... Having Casey Bradberry wrestling 125lbs and Travis Herald at 130lbs. They are a younge team this year though but in the future as next year they should do great. They first opponent this year is Covington which is Dec. 8 so everyone come out and support everyone...

During the 2007 season, the boys' tennis team went undefeated (17-0) and won the regular season and tournament in the Blue Ridge District.

There are numerous student organizations at AHS including Black Heritage Club, Concert Choir, Emergency Crew, Expressions Etc., FCCLA, Foreign Language Club, FFA, Key Club, Martial Arts Club, Pep Club, SADD, Stage Crew, Student Cooperative Association, Students for Christ, Technology Student Assistant, Varsity Club, and Youth-in-Government. Also, the National Honor Society and Beta clubs are groups exclusive to select juniors and seniors.

The AHS Band is a prominent organization at Alleghany and in the surrounding community.The Band consists of an advanced band and an intermediate band. Advanced Band consists of mostly upperclassmen, but there are also some freshmen members who audition in. Included in Advanced Band are the Marching Band, wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Pep Band. The Marching Band performs at every home football game and at local parades including the Labor Day parade and the Covington, Clifton Forge, and Iron Gate Christmas parades. The Marching Band also participates in two field competitions each October. Intermediate Band consists of predominantly freshmen, but some upperclassmen opt to be members.
