School Reviews

2   2/8/2010
A. Although Renton High School has a great academic program, the greatest flaw of this school is the students themselves. The students at Renton High School are not "gangster" or "dangerous." But, a majority of students are plagued by an incredibly low work ethic. In AP classes, which are supposed to have the best and brightest students of the school, 90% of the students in these classes do not do the homework and do not care about participating in discussion or activities. A student can easily rise to the top ranks and get a 4.0 simply by turning in all their assignments on time. To compensate, teachers often take several days out of their curriculum to allow for make-up work in class, and many use a lecture-based format instead of discussion based or activities format because that would require out of class research which most students at Renton High School are not willing to do. This leaves students unprepared for the "real world" of post-secondary education where the teachers will NOT wait for the class to turn in all their late assignments. b. There is a plethora of activities to participate in at Renton. There are several Choir programs, Band, Orchestra, community service clubs, a stellar Speech and Debate team, DECA, FBLA, Drama club and more. There are also lots of sports to participate in every season. Yet, once again most of the students seem to not care about all the opportunities they have. The same group (possibly about 200 out of 1000) very dedicated students seem to participate in multiple clubs and sports, while most the students do not spend their time in activities after school. c. Academic or athletic awards - Renton wins many awards, which shows the high caliber of several students. Students go to Nationals in Speech and Debate and FBLA. Sports teams constantly make it to the State Level. d. Facilities - The building has beautiful facilities. There is a new weight room and amazing Performing Arts Center. Unfortunately, many students do not respect the facilities and there is a lot of trash and food on the ground. e. Level of parent involvement - Although there is not a lot of parent involvement, the kids here are good at being independent for themselves. The students make good things happen without the nudging of their parents along the way. Many students here are working incredibly hard for a brighter future.
