School Notes:
  • Cedar Ridge High School is a school in Hillsborough, North Carolina. It was officially opened in 2002, and at the time only served students in grades nine through eleven. The original student body was primarily made up of students in the southern portion of Orange High School's attendance area (in general, areas south of US Highway 70, exclusive of the attendance areas of Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School). The first senior class graduated in 2004. As of the 2008-2009 school year, Cedar Ridge is running on the block schedule, with two different sets of four classes every semester.
  • Alisa R. McLean, formerly the principal of A. L. Stanback Middle School, served as the school's principal from 2002 through 2005 (in addition to serving during the planning year of 2001-2002). She was assisted during the school's inaugural year by assistant principals Dr. Rodney Trice (now serving with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, most recently as interim principal of Carrboro High School), Dr. John Brian Heath (who at the time was a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, now serving as an administrator at Walter M. Williams High School in neighboring Burlington, the school from which the current principal came in 2005), and Daniel Davis (who now serves as principal of Carder Elementary School in Corning, New York). Upon McLean's resignation in 2005 to pursue doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and to serve as assistant director of the North Carolina Principal's Executive Program, she was succeeded by Gary Thornburg, who had previously served as principal of Walter M. Williams High School. As of 2008, McLean served as principal for four years (including the planning year), while Thornburg has served for three. Dr. McLean now serves as Assistant Superintendent of the Alamance-Burlington School System.
  • Authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme since July 2004, Cedar Ridge currently has 54 juniors and seniors enrolled in the two-year IB program at its school. IB students must complete an extended essay and a Theory of Knowledge course to graduate with an IB diploma, and also must obtain 150 CAS (creativity, action, service) hours.
  • Cedar Ridge High School is also known for its award winning band program under the direction of conductor Patrica Quigley. The program consists of two jazz bands, a marching band, a Symphonic Band, and also a Wind Ensemble.
  • One of the most active extracurricular organizations on the campus is the Key Club, which, within a year of the school's opening, had grown to over 100 members, had several of its members elected to district office, and was featured in the internationally distributed Keynoter magazine. Anyssa Black was elected international trustee of Key Club International at the 2008 international convention in Orlando, Florida. She was the first Cedar Ridge student to be elected to an international office in the organization.
