School Notes:
  • Northgate High School, Home of the Broncos, is located in a suburban neighborhood in Walnut Creek, California. Part of the Mount Diablo Unified School District, the school was built in 1974. Its name derives from its location at the north entrance of Mount Diablo. Often rumored to be a result of an architectural design experiment, the entire school is located indoors.
  • Northgate High School is known for its prison-like appearance; the building was constructed almost entirely out of concrete. The only main windows (often vandalized) are large ones located in the entrance, office, atrium, and cafeteria.
  • In the athletic field, Northgate is also known for its football team. While the team is not thought of as particularly good, there are still fans in the bleachers who vivaciously cheer them on.
  • The instrumental music program at Northgate is considered to be very good and has earned many awards. It consists of a Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Marching Band. The head of the music department and instrumental music teacher is Greg Brown. The Northgate Marching Band is a group of close-knit band kids who are greatly devoted to marching band, but do not under-emphasize the importance of the "togetherness" of the group. Although the band is often quite small, being made up of about 30 to 40 people (most bands usually have from 50 to 150 members,) they do quite well in competition and win many awards.
  • In the 1990-91 school year, Northgate High School was known for its temporary relocation to portable trailers on an adjacent property. This was done in fear of fire-retardant asbestos fibers leaching from ceiling structures following the Loma Prieta earthquake. The Mount Diablo Unified School District spent several million dollars inspecting and removing material from the main buildings and a debate was raised whether the district should have closed the facility indefinitely without making such a substantial investment. For local parent groups, the nearest alternative for their children, Clayton Valley High School, was insufficient and politics rebuilt the school for the Fall of 1992.
  • As of October 2006, the school is anticipating the long-awaited new "Little Theatre". The new name of the theatre is the "Jack DeRieux Little Theatre", named for the former drama teacher at the school.
