Eight finalists were announced Wednesday in the MidCarolina Bank Excellence in Education Teacher of the Year awards program. Six finalists are teachers in the Alamance-Burlington School System. They will compete for the Teacher of the Year award that will be announced Sept. 9.

Students in two schools in Burlington and one in Gibsonville have been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu virus. While that's not good, the timing could have been worse. In each case, school was either out for the summer or nearly out when the cases of H1N1 were confirmed.

The Alamance-Burlington Board of Education will vote in late April on whether to approve a year-round schedule at Graham Middle School. If approved, the change would go into place for 2009-10 school year.
