  • Torrington High School is the lone public high school in the city of Torrington, Connecticut. The school strives to live up to its four A's: academics, activities, arts, and athletics.
  • Academics
  • Torrington High School requires each student to take a minimum of 22 credits to graduate from high school, as is standard due to regulations with the Connecticut Education Law.
  • The credit breakdown is;
  • Electives – 5 credits (Including 1 Computer Applications Course)
  • English – 4 credits
  • Fine Arts – 1 credit
  • Health – 1 credit
  • Mathematics – 3 credits
  • Physical Education – 1 credit
  • Applied Education – 1 credit
  • Science – 3 credits
  • Social Studies – 3 credits (Including U.S. History and American Government/Citizenship)
  • A minimum of six (6) credits need to be taken each year, unless a special exception from the administration is granted. Credits are only awarded upon successful completion of a class. Successful completion of a class means that a class was passed with no lower than a sixty-five (65), the lowest passing grade in the Torrington High numeric grading system.
  • The numeric grading system grades on a scale of one-hundred (100) to zero (0). Each has an equivalent letter grade, but the numeric system is used more commonly.

  • 90 - 94 A-
  • 85 - 89 B
  • 80 - 84 B-
  • 75 - 79 C
  • 70 - 74 C-

  • Additional credits can be awarded to students by taking classes off-campus. In such cases the administration does not assign a number grade but indicates the credit awarded on the student's transcript.
  • Torrington High School's grading system is broken down into an honour system that includes Honours with Distinction (no grade below 95), High Honours (all grades average 90 or higher and no grade below and 80), and Honours (an average of 85 or higher and no grade below an 80).
  • As is standard for high schools, different classes are weighted in different ways.
  • 00- General Level- Introductory level classes, classes providing remediation. General Level classes have very little outside course-work.
  • 04- College Prep- Require a fair amount of responsibility and ability to manage time and assignments.
  • 06- Honours- Advanced level classes that require motivation in addition to responsibility.
  • 08- Advanced Placement (AP)- College level classes that are on a very high level. College credits are awarded for most AP classes.
  • Athletics
  • The nickname of the Torrington athletic teams is the Red Raiders. Torrington competes in the Naugatuck Valley League. The boys' basketball team won the 2006 Division II State Championship. The boys' tennis team also won 77 matches in a row.

  • Torrington High School, and the Torrington Public School District in general, is well-known for the quality of its music program. Torrington has been listed as one of the Best 100 in America for Music Education every year between 2000 and 2008 with the exception of 2004. The performing ensembles at Torrington High School have received numerous honors and awards. The Chamber Choir was selected to perform in the 2009 National Festival Chorus at Carnegie Hall. The Orchestra has won Best Overall High School Orchestra in Williamsburg, VA and Boston, MA. The Jazz Ensemble has received numerous Superior Awards including Highest Scoring Jazz Ensemble at the 2008 Heritage Music Festival in Philadelphia, PA. The THS Jazz Ensemble was also selected to perform with the United States Air Force Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble during their 2008 Connecticut Tour. The THS Symphonic Band received Superior Rating, Outstanding Concert Band and Adjudicators Award for the "Highest Scoring Concert Band" at the 2008 Heritage Music Festival in Philadelphia, PA. In 2009 the Symphonic Band received an Outstanding Rating and scored 48/50 (sight-reading) at the Connecticut American School Band Directors Ensemble Festival. The THS Marching Band "The Pride of Torrington" was to represent Connecticut in the 2006 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and 2010 National Independence Day Parade both in Washington, D.C.
  • The music program also branches out into non-performance groups. There is a half-year class dedicated to teaching the basics of guitar, and is graded on skill level through playing tests. Music Technology is another class where students use sound-editing software and techniques to mix and create their own music. There is also a higher-level class for Music Theory. All music classes are considered electives and are optional, although they are popular among students.
  • Currently, chamber and concert choirs are directed by Lynn Morin. and string orchestra, jazz ensemble and symphonic band are directed by Wayne Splettstoeszer.
  • Clubs
  • Torrington High School is home to many clubs, including (but not limited to): Ceramics Club, Imagination Club, Young Democrats, Teenage Republicans, Interact, Key Club, Model UN, and Oceanography Club.
