  • South Miami Senior High School is a secondary school located at 6856 S.W. 53rd Street in Miami, Florida, USA; its principal is Gilberto Bonce.
  • The school is about a mile and a half west of the University of Miami. It contains a magnet program, named the Celia Cruz School of the Arts, which offers programs in seven strands: Media Production (with emphasis on television and film), Computer Graphics, Music, Photography, Commercial Art (with emphasis on Illustration), Dance, and Drama.
  • South Miami's athletic rivals are Coral Gables High School and Southwest Miami High School.
  • History
  • South Miami Senior opened its doors to students on November 10, 1971, built to relieve the overcrowding at Southwest Miami and Coral Gables High Schools. The student body selected the Cobra mascot and the school colors of orange, brown, and white.
  • Since opening, South Miami has had five principals: Dr. Warren G. Burchell, Ms. Judy Weiner, Mr. Thomas L. Shaw, Mr. Eugene Butler, Mr. Craig Speziale, and now Mr. Gilberto Bonce. Dr. Burchell was the longest serving principal, serving 22 years.

  • South Miami HS is 84% Hispanic, 8% Black, 7% White non-Hispanic, and 1% Asian.
  • Uniforms
  • On April 15, 2008, the Miami-Dade County School Board proposed that the school should have uniforms for the 2008-2009 school year. This was agreed. The Uniform Policy is:
  • Shirts: Polo or oxford style shirts (with sleeves) must have a collar. Midriffs cannot be exposed and undergarments must not be visible. Students may use striped or solid colored shirts within the allowed color scheme.
  • Pants: Dark Brown or Khaki in a full-length (boys and girls) or Capri (girls) styled pant which falls below the knee. spandex, sweat pants, skirts,are not permitted. Brown or Khaki Shorts are now permitted,and also beige or brown jeans are also permitted.Pants must be worn at the waist and must be accompanied by a belt. Pants should be worn uniform style; the "dropping" of pants is not permitted.
  • Shoes: Students cannot wear open shoes. Shoes must have backs (closed shoes only). Sandals, open toed shoes, and soft sole shoes are not permitted.
  • Other: Hats, scarves, and hooded garments are not to be used during the school day. School emblem patches and badges may be placed on student shirts.
