School Notes:
  • Deland High School is a public high school in Deland, Florida (Volusia County).
  • Controversy: In May 2002, 12 students super-glued stolen beehives within the school and also glued a large number of classroom and building doors. The school prank resulted in the release of a swarm of 80,000 bees. The students were suspended and later sentenced to perform community service. This prank was also the first to air on MTV's show High School Stories: Scandals, Pranks & Controversies receiving an hour long special.
  • Band: DeLand's band has gained recognition over the last 4 years with Ted Shistle's direction. Since his employment the band has visited the FBA's State Concert Festival three times, twice receiving the highest possible ratings. Additionally, the band has consistently received superior marks in the District FBA Marching Festival and has visited the Georgia Peach Bowl, where it received recognition as Concert Band Grand Champion. Also, the band recently participated in the 2nd Annual Timber Creek Performing Arts Marching Festival, and placed 4th Overall and 2nd in Class, during competition. Their Percussion came in 3rd overall in the standstill competition, and were awarded best Tenors.
  • Notable alumni: Terence Trent D'Arby, singer/songwriter, now known as Sananda Maitreya. (Class of 1979)
  • Bridget Gordon, member of the 1988 US Olympic gold medal Women's basketball team. (class of 1985).
  • Sara McLarty, champion swimmer, 15-time All American (class of 2000).
  • Tra Thomas, NFL offensive lineman.
  • Luke Scott, Houston Astros outfielder.
  • Mibalz Zahari, Olympic bronze metal winner in amateur Boxing.
  • Lisa Davies, Former Fashion Plate, she now models for campaigns such as Emporio Armani.
  • Theodore "Teddy Bear" John Shistle III, Current director of bands. (class of 1996).
