School Notes:
  • Jesup Wakeman Scott High School is a public high school located in Toledo, Ohio. It is part of Toledo Public Schools. It was named for a former editor of The Toledo Blade from 1844 to 1847. Scott was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and well-known civic leader who envisioned Toledo as the "Future Great City of the World." The current high school building was built in 1913. After receiving a $1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Scott High School began a transformation from a comprehensive high school to four small learning academies. Each academy, or "Small School" is based on a different career pathway. The school's nickname for its sports teams is the Bulldogs and their colors are maroon and white. Their basketball program has been known historically as a powerhouse in the Toledo City League with their biggest rival being the Libbey Cowboys. Their annual Libbey v. Scott game is a big event for Toledo, Ohio. Scott is also known for its marching band the "Fantastic Dancing Machines," who has won numerous awards in band competitions throughout the United States. The band has performed all over the country. Famous Scott alumni include author Mildred Taylor (1961); jazz pianist Art Tatum; Olympic Gold Medalist (Middle Weight Boxing) Dr. Wilbert McClure (1960); professional football players Earnest Wright (1957), Willie Harper (1968), Jim Parker (1953), Odell Barry, Sam Price (1961), and Nate Washington (2001) just to name a few.
  • The school is closed for a $39 million dollar renovation that will take place. It should be finished in December 2011. Until then the students, staff and faculty have been moved to the closed DeVilbiss_High_School_.
