WELCH — The Mount View High School volleyball team will hold its tryout and first practice on Thursday (Aug. 20) at the school from 5-7 p.m. Players need to bring a copy of their insurance card and a completed physical form.

ELKHORN — The drive to the hoop ended in the blink of an eye with two bodies from opposing teams crashing into each other on Saturday afternoon. The ref’s whistle blew, and for a split second both teams and spectators waited with apprehension.

Mount View High School in Welch, West Virginia was opened in 1978, when the Welch and Gary high schools were consolidated into one institution. Northfork High School was merged into Mount View as well in the fall of 1984. The school chose brown and gold as its colors and a knight as its mascot, and the Mount View Golden Knights were born. Since the late 1970s Mount View has added to its facilities and programs. In 2002, the school integrated middle school children in, creating Mount View Middle School. From 2003 to present, work has continually been going on at the school and has produced a new section especially for the middle school, as well as finishing the auditorium, in which the Mount View High School Class of 2005 was the first to hold commencment ceremonies in. There have been several principals at the school including the first, Mr. Bob N. Jack, Mrs. Barbara Smith, Mrs. Judith Kowalski, Mrs. Barbara Hairston, Mrs. Barbara P.T. Smith, Mr. Dan T. Zirkle, and now Adam Grygiel. Mrs. Barbara Hairston passed on while still principal at the school and homegoing services for her were held in the school gymnasium. The school has never won a state championship in any sport.
